Greetings Brothers and Sisters in Christ;
We continue to work to lift up leaders for Christ.
In June we held two pastoral outreach events. As a result, the women’s weekend in October hosted one pastor; Varinia Espinosa. Our January Ultreya will be held at her church, St. Mark’s Lutheran in Springfield, VA. It would be wonderful to see the community support this new pastor as she begins assisting with Via de Cristo.
We are hopeful to have a few pastors attend the spring weekends as well.
In August a training guide was created to assist Rector(a)s in developing teams. This will help to define roles during team meetings.
I attended the NLS Gathering at Wake Forest University in July. One of the breakout sessions focused on communities developing a five-year plan. The Secretariat will be looking at this in the upcoming year. Please consider if this planning opportunity is an answer to your prayer to find a way to begin your leadership.
Speaking of raising leaders up for Christ, we still have some openings on the Secretariat. Each position is only a three year commitment and is a great training ground to learn and to gain experience. Please prayerfully consider if you are being called. God equips the called to get His work done. If you don’t answer, who will? Is this community important enough to spend a few hours a month in service? Please reach out to Holly Hypes, Lay Director.
Your sister in Christ,
From the Treasurer
Thank you for your support in 2017 of the Clergy Information Sessions in June, the Women's Weekend in October as well as your generous donations to the Scholarship Fund. Year-end tax statements will be sent to you in mid-to-late January. Thanks also go to Thrivent Financial for supporting our Scholarship Fundraiser. Of course the largest expense is for lodging and food at the 4-H Camp but we have other non-weekend expenses like insurance, music licenses and postage. Your continued support of Rainbow Via de Cristo with "unrestricted" donations is always welcome. Please consider a small monthly donation using PayPal or your bank's Bill Payer service to set this up -- several members are already doing this with monthly donations ranging from $20 to $100. If you have any questions, please call Dave Lambert on 301-983-5034.

The 2018 National Via de Cristo Annual Gathering for will be held July 26-29 at Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Florida. Rainbow VdC pays the registration fee for its three Delegates. In addition, Dave Lambert attends as the National Lutheran Secretariat (NLS) Database Coordinator and John Aclin attends as the NLS Region 5 Coordinator. Attending a National Gathering is a great experience -- just ask anyone who has attended in past years! To encourage people who have never attended a National Gathering before, your Rainbow VdC Secretariat voted to offer up to four scholarships for first-time Non-Voting Attendees to "shadow" our Delegates. See Lay Director Holly Hypes for more information or if you wish to apply for a scholarship worth over $200.
You may ask if 2016 is a typographical error, why not? In most cases, personal income taxes coincide with a calendar year but not so for many business and government agencies. For example, the Federal fiscal year begins on October 1 and Montgomery County government begins on July 1. Our Fiscal Year started on November 1, 2016 (hence FY2016) and ended on October 31, 2017. That's why I have been so concerned with accounting for the Fall Weekend in a timely manner -- I had this deadline that few of you knew about.
This year's budget was only about $18,500 because we had no weekends in the Spring and only one weekend in the Fall We did, however have Clergy Information Days in June. Next year's budget will be closer to $30,000 when we have the usual four weekends.
Here is a snapshot of our income and expenses for FY2016, the period ending October 31, 2017:
I appreciate all the help I have received over the past three years; you have responded well to the establishment a dedicated Scholarship Fund. As a result of tighter financial controls and your generosity, Rainbow Via de Cristo is now in a much better financial condition than before. I have taken the job of Treasurer seriously and studied to become a Certified Nonprofit Accounting Professional, a designation conferred on me by Nonprofit CPAs.
